Equine Practice Management Software: An Honest 2026 Comparison for Solo Practices

Equine practice management software comparison is a crowded corner of the internet, and most of the articles out there are written by software companies comparing themselves favorably to everyone else. This is not one of those articles.

This post compares the three practice management systems most commonly considered by solo and small equine veterinary practices in North America in 2026: Cassadol, ThoroVet, and ezyVet. It is written by Cassadol, but it is honest about where each system fits best,  including the scenarios where Cassadol is not the right choice.

The goal is to help you decide fast, not to convince you of anything.

The rest of this post unpacks what that table actually means in practice.

Who Cassadol Is Built For

Before running any equine practice management software comparison, the first question is always: who is each system actually built for? Cassadol is built specifically for one and two-vet equine practices — solo ambulatory vets, small mobile operations, and small fixed clinics doing primarily equine work. It is not a scaled-down small-animal system, and it is not a hospital-scale platform.

Cassadol is the right choice when:

  • The practice is one or two vets
  • Most work is ambulatory, on-farm, or racetrack
  • The vet needs full medical records, invoicing, and billing on a tablet or phone
  • Offline access on farm calls is important
  • HISA reporting is required for racetrack work
  • The practice wants to avoid paying for features it will not use

Cassadol is probably not the right fit when:

  • The practice has five or more vets with complex multi-location workflows
  • Hospital-scale census management, surgical suite tracking, or advanced hospital workflows are required
  • The practice runs a mixed-animal hospital where small animal workflows are the majority of daily work

For mid-to-large equine hospitals, our sister software HVMS is specifically designed for that scale. For small animal or mixed-practice hospitals, ezyVet is usually a better fit than either Cassadol or ThoroVet.

What Cassadol Does Well

Cassadol’s strengths in any equine practice management software comparison come from the areas Business Infusions has spent two decades learning about equine practice. Specifically:

Equine-specific workflow from the ground up. Medical records, invoicing, controlled drug logs, and client communication are designed around the way equine vets actually work — not around small animal clinic rhythms.

Offline mode. Cassadol works offline when no internet, WiFi, or cellular hotspot is available. Records and invoicing sync automatically when the device reconnects. Offline mode is a $39/user/month add-on available on any plan.

Native HISA integration. Records entered in Cassadol are sent to HISA in the mandated format automatically. No dual entry. HISA is a $19/month add-on — full details on our integrations page.

Integrated payments through Stripe. Accept credit cards at the time of service or store cards securely for later. Reduces accounts receivable and eliminates double entry into payment processors.

Flat-fee data conversion from 19+ systems. $999 one-time to migrate from Avimark, DVMmanager, Impromed, Vet Blue, AdvantagePlus, FarmCall Plus, Intravet, Vetinform, Complete Clinic, Hippo, ThoroVet, Vetstar, DVMax, HVMS, Triple Crown, QuickBooks Desktop, QuickBooks Online, CSV, and Excel. Full list on our data conversions page.

ScribbleVet AI integration. For practices wanting AI-generated medical record notes, ScribbleVet transcriptions push automatically into Cassadol where the vet assigns them to the patient file and edits as needed.

Built on AWS. Cloud-hosted with automatic backups and enterprise-grade security.

What Cassadol Does Not Do

Being honest about limits matters in any equine practice management software comparison, especially software you might use for the next ten years.

Cassadol has limited inventory management. Full controlled drug tracking and vaccine tracking are built in, but large-scale inventory management with purchase orders, automatic reordering, and multi-location inventory is not part of the current feature set.

Cassadol is not designed for hospital-scale operations. Surgical suite scheduling, census management, multi-ward workflows, and enterprise reporting are not what Cassadol is built for. Those are the kinds of workflows that HVMS handles.

Cassadol does not replace a standalone scheduling platform. The software focuses on medical records, billing, payments, and compliance — not on calendar management as a primary workflow.

Being clear about this upfront is more useful than discovering it in year two.

ThoroVet: Strengths and Considerations

ThoroVet is another equine practice management software option often considered by solo equine practices.

ThoroVet and Cassadol overlap significantly in target market — both serve solo and small equine practices. The practical differences show up in specifics:

  • Data conversion from ThoroVet to Cassadol is supported as a one-time $999 flat fee, which tells you something about how often practices switch between them.
  • Native HISA integration inside Cassadol handles Thoroughbred regulatory reporting automatically. ThoroVet’s approach to HISA integration may differ — worth asking in any demo.
  • Offline mode depth varies between systems. If offline matters, ask specifically: can I create records offline, bill offline, and have controlled drug entries preserved through sync?

The honest advice: demo both. A thirty-minute demo of each is faster than reading five comparison articles, and the best-fit software for your practice usually becomes obvious within that first demo.

ezyVet: Strengths and Considerations

ezyVet is a cloud-based practice management software widely used across small animal and mixed-practice clinics globally. It is feature-rich, well-supported, and has a large user base.

ezyVet is rarely the best fit for a solo or small ambulatory equine practice for a few reasons:

  • It is built for clinic-based workflows, not primarily ambulatory work
  • Much of its feature set serves small animal practice patterns that do not apply to equine work
  • Pricing tends to scale up with features that solo equine vets will not use

ezyVet is often the right choice for a mixed-practice hospital or a small animal clinic that also treats horses. It is rarely the right choice for a mobile equine vet working primarily from a truck.

How to Run an Equine Practice Management Software Comparison in Under a Week

Choosing the right equine practice management software does not need to take weeks. Here is the fastest, honest path to a decision:

  1. Write down the three things your current system cannot do. Be specific. “Billing is slow” is not specific. “I cannot generate an invoice offline while standing in a barn” is specific.
  2. Book demos of two or three systems. Tell the sales team your three specific requirements upfront and ask them to address each one during the demo.
  3. Ask every vendor for references from practices that look like yours. A solo ambulatory vet testimonial matters more than a hospital testimonial if you are solo ambulatory.
  4. Confirm the cost of switching later. Flat-fee data conversion (Cassadol offers $999) vs. open-ended conversion costs matters if you ever need to leave.

The Bottom Line

Any equine practice management software comparison starts with the same honest truth: it is not one-size-fits-all. For solo and small equine practices primarily doing ambulatory work, Cassadol is built specifically for that profile. For mid-to-large equine hospitals, HVMS is the right fit. For mixed-practice or small animal hospitals, ezyVet usually makes more sense than either.

The right software for your practice is the one that matches how you actually work, not the one with the longest feature list.
